The San Juan Mountains were once loaded with silver. Prospectors made their claims and started digging. But when the ore ran out, the miners did the same, leaving a labyrinth of tunnels and the budding communities built around them. When a pristine nineteenth-century silver dollar shows up in a small-town antique store, latent passions are rekindled. Sixteen-year-old Dalton is new to the mountains. An upcoming fall deer hunt with a new friend, and a new rifle, and the prospects of getting to know a pretty girl he's seen in a nearby town conciliate his inevitable start at a new school. As classes begin, a local youth is reported missing. Surprisingly, he's not the first in the idyllic region. Sadly, he won't be the last. A picture window in Dalton's second-story bedroom provides stunning perspectives of the adjacent mountains and a dilapidated mine ruin. His observations through his hunting scope's oval lens, and the judgments he must make, will determine his fate, and that of the mountain town.
