At 2:00 in the morning of Friday, October 12th, 1492, after seventy-two days at sea, the sailor Rodrigo de Triana, aboard the "La Pinta", one of the three caravels of the Columbus fleet, spotted the Guanahani Island of today's archipelago of the Bahamas. Two weeks later, on October 28th, the island of Cuba was discovered, which the Spanish would colonize 19 years later in 1511. At noon on May 20th, 1902, the Cuban flag was hoisted over the Palace of the Captains General in Havana, at which time Cuba finally became a Republic. Ironically, the birth of the nation coincided with the death of its discoverer, Christopher Columbus, who also died on May 20th, but in 1506, in Valladolid, Spain. This book takes the reader through the most significant events spanning four centuries of fascinating history. Written in concise and straightforward language, and told through the eyes of the protagonists. The authors provide links to many of the historical materials referenced, encouraging the reader to be an active participant in discovering the truth of the events which shaped Cuba's independence from Spain.
