Rose Caswell and Rafe Whitfield are a young couple living in Kinston, North Carolina in 1968. When an unexpected pregnancy occurs, plans to marry are thwarted by the Caswell patriarch, Hamilton John Caswell. The ensuing tragedy and loss recall the kind that happened regularly before societal changes of the 1970s. Broken hearts and broken families litter the ragged road traveled by Rose and Rafe who find that love is complicated under any circumstances but even more so when family dysfunction, mental health issues and societal expectations come into play.
