This book is for everyone to read and apply to their own circumstances to promote the understanding of the meaning behind a behaviour. It examines how we relate to others although it focuses on the 'person' with dementia. We see the 'person' and 'not a damaged brain' or a 'disease' and we see their 'abilities' and 'not disabilities'. When people react with anger or withdraw from certain persons, we do not interpret these reactions from our own behaviours, we tend to relate the reactions to the person's 'damaged brain' and 'disabilities' and when a person's needs are not met, the person may try to use behaviour to communicate the unmet needs. This can be very frustrating as we may see the person's behaviour as challenging. I had applied Social Role Valorisation (SRV) as a therapeutic intervention successfully at the time when SRV had not been specifically applied as 'a therapeutic intervention' in mental health. Thanks to Dr Andrea who credited my work as a 'novel idea'. Nursing assistants, carers, and anyone who is looking after a person with dementia will benefit most.
