Tales of a zany little girl who didn't know she was poor growing up in the rural community of Powell, Wyoming. She grows up struggling with hand-me-downs, bobby sox and hair that frizzes -- all those other things girls endure when they fear they're "out of style." It's a kind of nutty family, a setting for recurring humor and heartache, hilarity and heartache, delight and depression. Maybe it's that mixture that leads to the mangled metaphors and comic relief that make Cindy's memoirs entertaining. Trying to bring her daughter up as a model Mormon child, her mother concluded many years later, "Cindy, you have been a trial." But the book is not. It's just very real.
