John Stewart and Alice Brooks arrive at a village in the North West Highlands of Scotland almost simultaneously; he to take up his new position as Director of a new Highland Wildlife Centre, and she to pursue her career as a weaver of fine tapestries. John's marriage is in difficulties and he is drawn to the enigmatic woman who lives alone in a converted croft house at the edge of the loch near the village. Alice has a secret and tragic history however, and when this is revealed shock waves disturb the life of the village community. This is a story which examines the nature of human love in its various forms. It explores its limitations, surprises and endurance.
