Bella Fairburn is working at a ski resort in the French Alps when she learns that her father Peter has had a second heart attack. She travels back to Australia with her aunt Liz (Peter's sister), who has been living in London for many years. Coming home to the family cattle station, Mullinjim, is a huge step for both women, as they've been trying to escape certain things about their past they'd rather forget. Peter is too sick to look after Mullinjim so, during a hot and dry November, Bella takes care of most of the cattle work with Liz's moral support. When Bella finds herself having to work with her old flame Gabe Mitchell to clear firebreaks and save bogged cattle from muddy dams, the attraction between them is as strong as ever. Then Bella's French boyfriend arrives to surprise her. Tensions abound! Meanwhile, romance blossoms for Liz too, and she must finally make a difficult confession about her past. The individual stories of Bella and Liz play out alongside Peter's eventual return to Mullinjim and a happy family reunion dinner hosted by Zoe and Mac (the lead characters in Zoe's Muster, now happily married). Emotions are already running high when Peter dies. All seems lost. Now, Bella and Liz are both forced to dig deep to make the right decisions about their futures. Will they find the courage to put the past behind them and reach for happiness at last?
