Heritage is the story of a 16-year-old Cheyenne boy and his struggle to survive the dangers of reservation life. His love of basketball is the driving force for any hope he might have of escaping a life of poverty and despair. One of his teenage friends commits suicide and another boy is showing signs of depression and possible suicidal thoughts.Still, it is a story of courage as Johnny, along with his grandfather, Gray Man, and his mother strive to make a better life for themselves and the tribe. By offering a connection with the ancient culture, they hope to bring spiritual peace and strength to the Cheyenne while living in the white world of America. They learn some of the e old arts, including making parfleches and pass that on to the young Cheyenne students at St. Andrew High School.As the school year progresses, the entire Northern Cheyenne Reservation is inspired and united as Johnny leads the Chiefs basketball team into the Montana Boys State Championship.
