The Surly Bonds

Picture it: Southern California, 1983. Eight-year-old Annie Cardona dreams of becoming an astronaut after watching Sally Ride become the first American woman to fly into space. Though she believes she has the right stuff to become an astronaut, her grades are not among the best. She struggles to understand math, which hinders her dream of space travel. Accompanied by her skeptical father, brainy older sister, and supportive but absent mother, she navigates through a tumultuous upbringing to overcome her mathematic handicap. But in 1986, a tragic event will change her life forever, and she must cope with the abstract concepts of grief, death and the pains of growing up in a dysfunctional household. With the space program hanging in the balance, as well as her grades, she will have to decide whether to abandon her dreams, or fight for them.
