This fast-paced, humor-filled adventure takes place in Bandidon, a medieval kingdom where, despite the king's good intentions, things are not exactly civilized. As the court celebrates the birth of King Audanot's newborn twin sons, Bryand and Daron, the court magician's trick goes horribly wrong, blowing up in his face (literally) and setting the throne room ablaze. The babies are rushed to safety. But by the time they are reunited with their father, no one can determine which of them escaped the womb first and is the rightful heir to the throne. Audanot decides to wait to see how his sons progress as they grow before proclaiming one of them his rightful heir. As the years pass, it becomes clear to the King that Bryand would make the better King. But before he can make his wishes known, Audanot dies of a mysterious illness. Bryand and Daron are forced to compete in a joust for the right to rule. However, Daron has employed the talents of an assassin, a master of poisons, in order to improve his chances. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned, and Daron is banished from the kingdom by his brother. But Daron finds a way to turn things his way, and in a daring attempt, manages to secure his brother's identity and is crowned King. Bryand escapes, but now finds himself a fugitive in his own country, mistaken for his brother and a wanted criminal. In an attempt to find the few loyal friends he has left, he blunders through a series of misadventures, while protecting his clever but frail retainer and a recently widowed woman and her two not-so-normal children from various monsters and demons, marauders, and man-eating plants.
