John Chapman was a young and aimless when he struck out to lay claim to land in the new Northwest Territory. Seeking work, he began selling and planting apple trees to early settlers, and became known as Johnny Appleseed. As fast as the colonist expanded, so did the stories of his adventures and unconventional ways. Some of the stories where his own creation, others the settlers witnessed; they viewed Johnny Appleseed as a free spirited man, imbued with a rare combination of Yankee ingenuity, self promotion, mysticism, and a friend of indigenous people. It's a little wonder that his name and story have remained and enduring part of American folklore
