PURPOSE AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Education is the backbone of the country and entire development process of any nation depends on the quality of the education (Ponmelil, 2007). Higher education is one of the greatest services provided by teachers. Today, with challenging environment in any college, every thing primarily depends on the teachers. A committed teacher can arm the students to meet the challenges being faced by the students and society at large. A good and committed teacher becomes a role model for students. It is the committed teacher who can inculcate values, nurture and help students to internalize values. A good teacher shows positive attitude about students, is perceptive about students motives, strength, need and situation. They can be able to understand and act upon to solve the problems in the present multidimensional scenario. But in the present scenario and with the introduction of revised sixth pay commission report in 2006, teachers of higher education are facing greater problems. Teachers have to work for researches for academic excellence and have to attend seminars to update themselves with limited time while doing teaching at the same time. On the other hand students' strength is increasing year by year but posts of teachers are not increasing proportionally. Posts of teachers in higher education are lying vacant. On the contrary in every college teachers' and students' ratio is increasing day by day. Due to increasing strength of students, teachers feel difficulties to manage control them easily. Indiscipline in students is also increasing. More and more,
