Uses of Consciousness The English term 'consciousness' has been used ambiguously. Before it is defined, it is important to know its etymology. It is originally derived from the Latin 'conscious' - Con means with and Scir means "to know". Thus "consciousness" means knowing oneself or sharing knowledge with oneself about something. It also means conscious to oneself. Thus "consciousness" means one's ability to know and to perceive, and should not be confused with conscience, which is used in moral sense. Through consciousness one can know external world or consciousness itself from the first person perspective and from scientific point of view. It has been used synonymously with 'awareness' or 'experience' or 'subjectivity' or 'attention' or 'sense of self'. The term 'consciousness' has not been used by Plato and Aristotle explicitly in their works. Plato uses the word 'recollection' to imply a latent knowledge about which one is introspectively unaware. By sight Aristotle means introspective consciousness. The term consciousness has been defined in the history of philosophy in many ways. Rene Descrates in Part IV of Discourse on the Method makes a philosophical statement "I think therefore I am". He defines "thinking" as infalliable mental state or conscious state as the axiom of knowledge. John Locke makes a celebrated statement: Consciousness is the perceptions of what passes in a man's mind (1959, p
