Dowry prohibition is an evil practice resulting into the violation of the basic human rights of womankind. The custom of dowry is responsible for degradation of condition of women in the Indian society. Various social movements were run to combat this menas but without adequate legislative measures it is not possible to curb this social evil. The Constitution of India and compass is various provisions relating to equality liberty and dignity of women, the provisions of Indian penal code and the provisions of Indian Evidence Act also provide a safety network against the practice of dowry. The Parliament of India had enacted a special enactment named, the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961 to prevent the custom of dowry for the purpose of ensuring the dignity and safety of women in the Indian society. This book analyses the legal Framework in India to protect the women against the custom of dowry.
