A coming-to-age cultural experience! Bravely MisEducated: How I Lost My Voice, is for readers of all ages. It is a story about how childhood abandonment, abuse, and miseducation can lead to depression. Betty, a young brown-skinned girl growing up on the south side of Chicago. At the age of 5, her parents separated and so did Betty's relationship with her father. Betty and her eight other siblings moved from their private home to public housing projects and were quickly exposed to poverty, violence, oppression, sexual behaviors, and inequality. Betty is all-grown-up now, and she struggles with her identity, as she reflects back on her childhood, she discovers the root of why she is so unhappy, and indications on how she lost her voice. She suppressed so much pain due to several traumatic experiences she encountered without facing them. She realized she was miseducated on how she should have talked about what bothered her and how to express all her emotions in a healthy way. She regrets not standing up for herself and for other young children she grew up with because of the impact that later affected them all. Betty doesn't want to live as the little girl she once was so she finally speak about her childhood life and what she has learned from it. She started on a path of forgiveness to others and to herself so she can be emotionally free from bondage. She realizes the cause of her struggles as an adult was due to the lack of forgiving others, to include her father, who abandoned her at the age of five. Betty no longer lives trapped in shame as she courageously speaks about self-healing, freedom, love, and truth, while living her life unapologetically.
