Overview

This volume, written by leading thinkers in the field of Edward Schillebeeckx and modern theology, offers the first overview of all the historical, philosophical, political and theological aspects of his work. Edward Schillebeeckx was one of the most influential Catholic theologians of the 20th century. His thought was deeply rooted in Thomist metaphysics, which he brought into dialogue with the existential phenomenology of his time. Together with his contemporaries, Yves Congar, Karl Rahner and Marie-Dominique Chenu, Schillebeeckx played a key role in the preparations for the theology of the Second Vatican Council. After the Council, he engaged with new directions in philosophy, such as critical theory, hermeneutics and structuralism. In the 1970s, he wrote his magnum opus: Christology, firmly based on historical-critical exegesis, with profound political and soteriological implications. Schillebeeckx had to defend his theological position for the Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith in the Vatican several times, especially his innovative ecclesiological views on ministry and the sacraments.
