Life is cheap in the poverty stricken corner of southwest Missouri known as McDonald County. Every kind of sin and heartbreak lie hidden in the hills. There, neither law enforcement, nor its own citizens, have the resources or will to care about suspicious deaths of lowlifes, scoundrels, or even the wholly innocent. It is a perfect place for murder. Josie Morton moved from Chicago back to her parents' home-place in Mac County in late midlife.
