Ozu Yasujiro, whose film Tokyo Story (1953) recentely topped the BFI Directors' Top 100 Films list, is one of the most widely known, yet under-researched, non-Western film directors. This book re-examines Ozu's entire career and his films from a new soci-historical approach. Drawing upon Japanese materials yet to be examined in the West, Woojeong Joo focuses on Ozu's dilemma as a commercial studio director, his interest in sound cinema, his war experiences and his complex stance on postwar Japanese politics and society.
