Overview
The idea of writing a novel emerged over a relatively short period of time and, curiously, the premise hit me while writing my first book, Classroom Under Construction (published in 2006). Drawing from a memory of over thirty years in education as both a teacher and administrator, the research for this book revisited in a strikingly clear way the many encounters in which I participated or observed. Stories about students, teachers, parents, and other stakeholders of the school community are seldom told, let alone described in a personal or purposeful manner. Hence, Angels in My Backpack was born.The novel's structure and content is shaped in part by the influence of Mitch Albom's best seller, The Five People You Meet in Heaven. His approach was simple yet effective. He posed a fascinating question about the purpose of individual lives. A quick read, the inclusion of a spiritual base created a universal reader appeal. The proof of the pudding is that it remains a viable and highly acclaimed work. One could only dream of duplicating such an effort. I am dreaming, nonetheless.I have written five stories that chronicle the school life experiences of children whose destinies are shaped by the intervention of individuals within the school community. Challenged and discouraged, the children are transformed by many benefactors. But only one has invisible wings. The book is feel good and a work of ôheart.ö Most importantly, it offers lessons of fundamental learning and hopeful living. The content in each story will appeal to a wide readership, especially educators. Heaven knows we all went to school!
