The chemistry of minerals is also explained using a simple revision of some basics including the formation of ions, ionic and covalent bonds and the formation of crystal lattices.Knowledge about minerals is extended to those minerals which play an important part as raw materials in manufacturing of metals and other products - economic minerals. Their nature and how they are mined, processed and made into the finished product is explained. The production of metals such as iron, copper and aluminium are detailed.The latter part of the book is devoted to energy and how it is currently produced from Earth materials, coal, oil and uranium with a balanced view on the future of these fuels in a world faced with global warming. Some alternative, renewable energies are also described and their future as replacement for fossil fuels is examined.
