Overview
Chester Seth Husted was 24 years old when he was killed in action while fighting with the U.S. Marines in France, a little more than a month before World War ended. The son of Wallace and Emma Sutherland Husted, Chester was born in Rialto, California, on March 21, 1894. He spent his early childhood in Highland, California, and moved with his family first to San Fernando and then to Corona in about 1908. This account traces Chester's time in the Marines, from his enlistment to his death, based on letters he sent home and which his mother preserved, and on letters she and others wrote him but which he did not receive before his death and were returned. The letters here are reproduced verbatim, except for some editing for clarity purposes, and I hope will serve as a time capsule of World War I and life in Corona, California.
