He died on Good Friday, April 23, 303 AD. He was executed at the inception of the final and most severe state-sanctioned Christian persecution in Roman history. During the 28 years of his life, George set an example so amazing that his goodness and memory have endured. He was a military officer who was loved by the people he conquered. The records of his military successes and powerful witness of faith have largely been destroyed, but what remains recounts a life that inspired many to faith in Christ. He is somewhat of an exception among great men and saints in that he is known and respected by Christians, Jews and Muslims throughout the Middle East, from Africa to Asia, and in Europe. He bent his will fully to their common deity, the God of Abraham, the one true and living God, in defiance of the Roman Emperor. His fame and popularity grew steadily, even after he was executed for his faith. George has been revered for his military conquests, his liberation of the oppressed, and his uncompromising fidelity to Almighty God. Some 800 years after his death, many Christians and non-Christians alike still honored him as a saint who brought peace, prosperity, and religious tolerance to their people. His fame was so enduring that the Crusaders of the late 11th and early 12th centuries met in the Holy Land and collectively adopted the banner and colors of St. George, a red cross on a white field. Upon their return from the crusades, these soldiers romanticized the legend of St. George with a symbolic account of his mythical battle with a dragon for the life of a princess and access to the water of life, which had no prior historical reference. He is often depicted in art on a horse with a spear, above a dragon. He is the Patron Saint of the following nations: Aragon, Bulgaria, Catalonia, Egypt, England, Ethiopia, Georgia, Greece, India, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Lithuania, Malta, Palestine, Portugal, Serbia, Syria, Russia and Ukraine, among others. The historical evidence regarding the details of St. George's life is somewhat limited. Yet it is clear that he was a true saint, and the type of person who lived by every word of God. God intends for all His children to live by His word, studying and pondering how each passage, principle, and truth might help us to understand our own experiences in life. Each principle of righteousness and holiness is not so much a mystery as it is a puzzle. We are invited to work at them and solve them as we each gather experiences from day to day. It has been said the gospel is so simple that a child could not err therein, and yet it is so profound that it can never be fully comprehended in mortality. The mysteries of God are not secret, but they are sacred. They are available to all who will honor them.
