Overview
When English highwayman Johnny Holt is sent to the gallows, he has no doubts that his soul will burn in Hell for all eternity. Instead, he is told that his one virtue, his refusal to abandon a friend, even to save his own life, has earned him a reprieve. He finds himself in a place called Sarkans on the planet Pasaule, a place much like the England where he had lived before. but with one big difference. There is a wide deep canyon on the southern edge that is inhabited by fierce dragons. Their leader, a huge monster called The Devastator, occasionally comes out of the canyon to attack and destroy towns nearby. Holt has been told that he has five years in which to perform some heroic deed of self-sacrifice, an act that will involve danger and risk but with out any profit to himself, in order to atone for his misdeeds back on Earth. If he fails, his soul will die and he will cease to exist at all, a fate that frightens him even worse that the thought of eternal torment in Hell, But what can he do to redeem himself and save his soul?
