Overview
This book examines the relevance of the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) in responding to humanitarian challenges across the world. While arguing that R2P has evolved into an international moral norm, Ercan concludes that R2P cannot lead to a positive change in the international system without being equipped with new powers. ôGozen ErcanÆs persuasive analysis shows that æinhumanitarian indifferenceÆ is not the fault of the R2P moral norm or of normative entrepreneurs but rather of feckless states and an even feebler and unreformed Security Council.ö --Prof. Thomas G. Weiss, The CUNY Graduate Center "While academic analyses of the Responsibility to Protect have become increasingly stagnant and introverted, Pinar Gozen offers a fresh and ambitious approach. In addition to presenting a convincing assessment of R2P's efficacy and failings, Gozen advances a thought provoking set of prescriptions that transcend the narrow parameters of the contemporary debate." --Dr Aidan Hehir, Reader in International Relations, University of Westminster
