Overview
Letters to Lord Byron and a Letter to the Reverend W. L. Bowles is a collection of letters written by William Lisle Bowles, an English poet and critic, in 1821. The book contains a series of letters addressed to the famous poet Lord Byron, as well as a letter to Bowles himself. Bowles' letters to Byron are a response to the latter's scathing critique of Bowles' poetry in his work, English Bards and Scotch Reviewers. Bowles defends his poetry and argues against Byron's criticisms, while also expressing admiration for Byron's own work. The letter to Bowles himself is written by an anonymous author, believed to be Byron, and is a response to Bowles' criticism of his own poetry. The letter is a biting satire of Bowles' work and his perceived lack of talent as a poet. Overall, Letters to Lord Byron and a Letter to the Reverend W. L. Bowles provides insight into the literary controversies and rivalries of the early 19th century, as well as showcasing the writing and critical abilities of Bowles and Byron. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
