Mark Twain has been famously attributed to saying "The difference between fiction and non-fiction is that fiction has to be believable." It's easy to think that fiction is an exaggerated view of reality; but it's usually just the opposite: fiction is a way of trying to rationalize and make sense of the insane nature of reality.
