About half a hundred years of poems are here, most of them written in the last century when the poet was a student, young mother and wife. Rarely with a rhyme scheme, often abruptly irregular with unconventional use of punctuation her content stays close to home: family, marriage, broken relationships, withering loneliness, regrets, memories of people who are as loved in spirit as they were in life. Cued by humble scenes: hot soapy dish water, window reflections, and screaming children. Above all, her abiding dreams. Hope and joy, however distant, never disappear. In contrast to so much of the 1960s and follow-on decades, there is no nudity here, in-your-face confrontation, language laced with Saxon graphics or political posturing. This is about a Minnesotan at heart living a modern American life. She reaches farther than Emily Dickinson but shuns the grinding axes that characterize so many of the moderns. She writes mostly in longhand on any scrap of paper near to hand, whenever the muse suggests the first line.
