Overview
Sunset Dreams glides through events and themes mirroring the author's life and experiences--from North Dakota roots, to a job on Capitol Hill, to forming a new family. The book's forty-three poems render the grounded splendor of American landscape, explore the vibrant energy of America's capital, and offer individual perspective on formidable fields. Sunset Dreams offers readers hope, comfort, laughter, reminiscence, and awe. The poetry's diversity in style and rhythm capture the imagination, making the book a valuable addition to any poetry library. ""Many voices of new poets emerge with such internal scouring that every poem looks and sounds the same. That is not true of the extraordinary newcomer Matthew Nies. He can compose, it seems, in any form or style that strikes him as necessary for a poem, and all of his compositions contain the breath of fresh, high-plains air. He writes with equal ease about solid rural landscapes and the environs of Washington, DC. Perhaps above all, he communicates a faith as uncompromising and complex, in its definitions, in the form it takes in several poems, as a reader will find in the poetry of George Herbert--with no simple answers, on a trajectory all its own. He will travel far in the cosmos he fashions as his own."" --Larry Woiwode, author of What I'm Going to Do, I Think Matthew Nies was raised on a farm in rural North Dakota. He graduated from the University of Jamestown, where he studied writing under award-winning author and North Dakota poet laureate Larry Woiwode.
