New York City in the jazz age is alive with glamor and boundless optimism. But there is a darker side to the City. Kathryn McDougall is a missionary, stranded in New York since her husband went missing in Africa three years ago. So when Edith Thornbridge calls, frantic that her husband is missing, Kathryn is moved with sympathy. She sets out to find Jason Thornbridge, with the help of her husband's friend, Thomas Purdell, whose only goals are to enjoy life and avoid proposing to his long-term girlfriend, Josephine Ashcroft. Their search for the missing man will uncover a tangle of dangerous secrets, and attract the attention of a mysterious network that will put them in danger. But perhaps the greatest danger is their growing relationship, which threatens to disrupt both their lives.
