Can You Hear Me Now Hear What My Heart Speaks is a memoir of Ciera Carter's life while growing up deaf surrounded by hearing people who not always treated her fairly. Giving birth to her first child was supposed to be one of the most joyous moments for Ciera, but that moment quickly turned fearful when she discovered the doctors used unsterilized utensils on her that were just used on someone else seconds before she entered the room which in turn almost cost her and her newborn baby their lives. After enrolling in college, she was told they couldn't afford her an interpreter, and for her to get notes and help from her classmates. Imagine her anguish when everyone passed their class but her. For many years, Ciera was ignored and refused to be heard as she tried to voice her opinion and educate people in her rights. She is the only deaf person in her family and she refuses to allow her deafness or the mistreatment of others deny her a fair chance at life. With the help her mother and speech therapy, she learned to talk. In turn, her mother taught her to "Never Stop Using Your Vioce." She decided to write her story so that hearing people could see her heart, and the deaf community would have an advocate who will use their voice to bring about change.
