Memory of Light, An aftermath of Gettysburg, is a moving story about Jefferson Coates a 19-year-old Yankee officer in the 7th Wisconsin`s Iron Brigade who fought bravely there and won a Medal of Honor. During the battle, he was blinded by shrapnel in both eyes and lay wounded on the battle field where a Confederate soldier tried to steal his boots. Fortunately another Confederate soldier rescued him by stopping the theft, giving him some water, and moving him to a safer place. He lay unattended for days before Union soldiers found him, gave him local care, and sent him by train to the then state-of-the-art Satterlee Hospital in Philadelphia. Jefferson refused to die and his determination and medical care kept him alive. But it was the loving care of Rachel Drew, a lady who sent him a warm soft quilt as a wounded-warrior present that gave him a reason to live and saved his life.
