Overview
As tensions rise across the United States, conflict with Mexico seems inevitable. But on one North Carolina farm in the 1840s, life is anything but exciting. Teenager Trey McPherson is bored of his rural life, and the latest news fascinates him. When the Mexican-American War breaks out, Trey sees his chance. He joins up to fight. Aching for glory, he cannot wait for battle. But what he finds is far different-and far more serious-than he imagined. The reality of war sets in as he watches enemies and friends alike lose their lives in the violence. Trey begins to think he made a terrible mistake, but it's too late to go back now. This riveting novel portrays a country on the verge of war. Many of the young men who feel the allure of battle will never make it home, and the ones who do will be forever changed. Trey's service brings him to the front lines, where the likes of Lee, Grant, and Jackson are taking their first steps into history. Trey might be making history, but by the end, all this young soldier wants is to make a fresh start somewhere entirely new.
