Lode Gold Mines of the Alleghany - Downieville Area, Sierra County, California. - Probably one of the best known areas for Gold in all of California, the belt between Alleghany and Downieville has produced and is still producing vast amounts of gold from its hard rock formations. While a lot of placer gold has been taken out as well, it is the hard rock mines and beautiful crystalline gold in Quartz that this area is known for.
