Overview
After Jean Laffite helped Andrew Jackson to win the Battle of New Orleans, he hoped to have the ships that were taken from him by Daniel Patterson restored. However, the courts ruled otherwise and a direct appeal to President Madison never received a response. Because of this, Laffite decided to establish a new base on Galveston Island, outside the territories of the United States and to pursue his war against Spain.
