Overview
A spinal cord injury (SCI) is the damage to the spinal cord, which leads to permanent or temporary changes in its function. Most cases of SCI occur due to physical traumas including gunshots, sports injuries, car accidents, tumors, infection, etc. It is characterized by a loss of muscle function, autonomic function or sensation in different parts of the body, particularly in the areas below the level of the injury. Depending on the injury, damage can extend into a state between paralysis and incontinence. SCI patients need to undergo extended periods of care.
