Overview
A series of changes in hormone production and structures of the ovaries and uterus of the female reproductive system occurs naturally and makes gestation possible is known as the menstrual cycle. The ovarian cycle regulates the formation and release of eggs. It also regulates the cyclic release of estrogen and progesterone. The uterine cycle controls the production and maintenance of the lining of the womb to receive a fertilized egg. The median length of a complete menstrual cycle is 28 days, but it can last for 21 to 35 days in adult women. Menopause is the time when menstrual cycle permanently stops in a woman and she is no longer able to conceive.
