Epigenetics studies heritable genetic changes that occur due to a change in gene function, generated through processes like DNA methylation, histone modification, etc. Epigenetic changes alter the microstructure of DNA or the associated chromatin proteins leading to gene activation or silencing. Chromatin is a macromolecular complex, consisting of DNA, RNA and protein found in cells. Its primary functions are packaging DNA into more compact and denser shape, preventing DNA damage, controlling gene expression and DNA replication. The structure of chromatin is subject to change depending on the stage of the cell cycle.
