Overview
In the turbulent aftermath of the 1965 Watts riots, Academy Award-winning screenwriter Budd Schulberg drives through the smoldering streets of Los Angeles, compelled to bring hope to a community left in ruins. Facing skepticism and resistance, he starts a writers workshop that soon draws the attention of the talented but wary Johnie Scott and other aspiring African American writers. As word of the workshop's success spreads, so does the scrutiny of the authorities, leading to a tense clash between art and systemic oppression. Watts Writers Workshop is a powerful screenplay about resilience, creativity, and the enduring power of words to inspire change. Darryl Harvey is a Los Angeles-based author and playwright committed to telling powerful, culturally rich stories rooted in African American history and resilience.
