Overview
Hay Rake Magazine by Arch Bristow (1882-1964) Arch Bristow began in the newspaper business as a cartoonist with the owl character "Zimmie", which began in 1902 and became syndicated nationally. He likely did all the illustrations in the Hay Rake as they seem to be in his style. He began the self-published monthly magazine "Hay Rake" in 1920 at the age of 38, in a modest shoemaker's shop in hamlet of Garland PA and grew it to a subscription of 20,000 in a few months. He continued to publish it till about 1939. At some point, perhaps after his hair went gray, he was known as the "Sage of Garland". He continued to write two books and newspapers columns into the 1960's.
