Few people would argue that threats have become all too real. The United States has suffered multiple incidents. California is currently recovering from an earthquake, Louisiana, a close call with tropical storm Barry, and New York have experienced a failure of its power grid protection system leading to a blackout affecting over 73,000 residences. While this lists a few of the latest incidents currently affecting the country, it in no way considers the threats from wildfire, tornadoes, civil unrest, or any of the other issues we face. The truth is we have built a house of cards that is waiting to collapse upon itself. It is our job to keep the cards up, pick up what falls, and keep moving forward. Our country's infrastructure, for the most part, is antiquated, beginning with the electrical grid. It doesn't take much for our electrical grid to stop working. Some places see the electricity going out regularly while others it's only occasionally. It might be a planned outage or not. Our other infrastructures, such as those controlling water, sewer, communication, and transportation, can be just as problematic. But how can we survive without our modern way of life? There is something to be said for our ability to ask Google a question, order products from Amazon, get news anytime we want it, or any of the other benefits that many of us take for granted. As a whole, we have been lucky to be born into this life, the world we know, where we work and play, and for the most part, I wouldn't have it any other way. My goal is to give you some knowledge that may help combat the threats you may face in the wake of a disaster. Everyone may have different risk factors based on where they live. Specific risks are higher in cities than in rural areas, and others that rural areas face every day and cities will never see. Some threats that neighborhoods don't need to concern themselves with others may mark as their highest risk. Then there are risk factors that everyone will face. No matter what the risk is, you must work to eliminate and reduce the effects of those you encounter. That's where this book comes in. Unlike books that try to tell you to move out to the country and build an underground bunker to hide in, I'll try to impart some practical techniques and approaches to preparedness. We will discuss when you should bug-out or evacuate and times to dig in and weather the storm based on where you are and what the threat is. While I hope that everything you read here remains nothing more than good-to-know information that you never have to use, the truth is many of you will someday have to decide what to do in an emergency. Even if you manage to avoid any catastrophic events, you will more than likely have a power outage, see some severe weather, witness a car wreck with injuries, or have a family member or friend in dire need. These are just part of being here on this great planet. In reading this book, you will learn how to store food and water for emergencies, perform a risk analysis, understand how to create different survival and bug-out kits to quickly get you on your way if you have to evacuate, and maybe a few other things along the way; ensuring your family's security and safety.
