The path to addiction includes an individual effectively silencing his conscience. The conscience is that part of person that inwardly affirms something as right or wrong.In the beginning the addict's conscience informs him that his actions are wrong. Through one or more mechanisms the addict silences or makes his conscience ineffective at producing guilt. Alternately some addicts have learned to ignore any guilt their conscience produces.On the path to putting addiction in the past it is important that the conscience be restored to a level of effectiveness.
