This is a time-travel romance story set in Bodie, California, an old gold ghost town. Bill Matthews is a TV reporter who goes there to cover a story. Nancy, his producer, and David Bernstein, his cameraman, and Ian Dunfey, sound man go with him. Bill goes into an old pharmacy looking for props for a backdrop. There are some old bottles on a wooden table. Carved into the table are many symbols, including a large star, and a warning not to change things. Despite this, Bill takes some bottles off the table for his shot. The next day, Bill awakes to find everything gone. He has been suddenly thrown back to the Bodie of 1871. It is a dangerous, violent town. Bill and the others try to rent a hotel room but are refused. They walk the streets in desperation until Anne comes to help them. She takes them to her ranch. She is a widow and needs some help with the ranch. Bill, David, and Ian help with repairs. Nancy makes a mess of simple chores. Nancy, David, and Ian go looking for the gold Nancy's husband hid before he was killed. Anne tells Bill he must put the bottles in their original order. He tries but cannot remember what it was. Anne urges Bill to try again. David and Ian choose a way to return to Sacramento. Bill warns there will be time problems at the Pacific Divide. David and Ian ridicule Bill and leave. Nancy plans to leave with Bill on a mysterious stagecoach. The jealousy simmering between the dark-haired Nancy and the blonde -haired Anne intensifies. Bill is still uncertain whether he has gone back in time. Bill and Anne ride to the Walker River. Under the stars, they fall in love. They return and Bill rearranges the bottles. Anne says the stage will come. Now a huge dilemma is before him. Bill must choose between the time he knows and the woman he loves.
