Two Civil Wars

It's 1865 and the War Between the States is almost over. In Mexico, a far more brutal civil war is reaching a turning point. Lincoln's advisors and most of Congress favor using massive Civil War military power to intervene in the Mexican War as a prelude to annexing the lands north of the Isthmus of Panama.The Russian Government approaches the US with an offer to sell Alaska for pennies an acre. Most of Washington considers the purchase of Alaska a total folly. Lincoln dispatches a group of explorers to Alaska to prove to Congress that the territory is a storehouse of mineral wealth, the purchase of which would dramatically expand America's landmass with without war.The explorers are shocked to find that one of Seward's own lieutenants is plotting against their mission, a mission made more critical when the U S Treasury entrusts millions in California gold to them. Chad Gritt II and his colleagues are prepared to fight the political battles, but nothing has prepared them for the betrayal of their mission by a Confederate spy.The explorers begin burying their own one at a time. That will seem like the good old days when the castaways realize that they are being hunted by both sides in the Mexican civil war. The Liberal Forces of Benito Juarez, and the army of Maximilian Emperor of Mexico are both determined to destroy the American invaders. But nobody they meet can be trusted in a country where everybody is a pawn to be played or sold. The more trying the situation gets, the more determined Gritt and the survivors are to fulfill their promise to the President and to find the Confederate zealots who landed them in the cauldron that is Mexico destroying itself.
