Overview
Is he a child or a demon? A shapechanger who is not to be trusted or a protector? Windspeaker Kyla Cren sings to the wind, gathers news from it, and passes on to her village its warnings about mindstealers. Those creatures rob human minds, leaving their victims insensible and helpless. Because Kyla's parents were victims of mindstealers, the desire for revenge consumes her. The mage Alair has a scheme to destroy the creatures and wants Kyla's help in carrying it out, but it could well be fatal to them both. To persuade her he entrusts to her care what appears to be a winsome boy about five years of age. "He's not a child at all," the mage tells Kyla, and challenges her to discover what he really is. That journey of discovery will take Kyla far from her native village into a cold and uncaring world in the early stages of an industrial revolution that has circumvented the isolated valley in which her village lies, ignorant of the outside world. This fantasy novel introduces the reader to the fictional nation of Arucadi, a sprawling continent-nation that is the setting for the Arucadi series of books. Read this novel and begin your travels through that country, where technology and magic clash.
