The London lives of Barbara and Crichie Dennison and their acquaintances Flora and Fred Peachley are juxtaposed with rural Rimton, where Barbara's long-time companion and village blacksmith Dave Reid resides with the pair's foster parents, Sarah and Dan Farmer.
