Overview
A mission of consequence: To find a mountain with their name on it. At risk: A part-time father's last chance to be a Dad to his coming-of-age son, their future relationship, and the dignity of fatherhood. In Ascending Namesake Mountain, author David A. McGuire chronicles a pair of father-son road trips, each 4,000 miles. They go for broke to penetrate a primitive and roadless 3,698 square mile designated National Wilderness-by foot and hoof-in the northern Rocky Mountains. This book is part journal of unguided exploration into wild lands populated with lions, wolves, and bears (Oh My!), and part memoir of adventures and calamities on the road, while crossing the trails of the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery of 1803-1806. Along the way they encounter battlegrounds, gold mines, tourist traps, white water, and historical factoids, all while experiencing the grandeur of The Great American Landscape and National Monuments in the West. Ride along while considering compelling, short side-stories of semi-famous, yet influential personalities of the past, judge saints and sinners, notice errors and omissions, rediscover a Code of Honor, and inquire into new possibilities of being a hero in the world of today.
