Overview

Rikki Wants a Pet is a warm, multicultural story for ages 4 to 13 about change, promises, and how love sometimes means finding a new way forward. When Rikki moves to a new neighborhood, everything feels different. She misses her cousin, feels unsure about her new home, and hopes for a puppy on her birthday. But when the lease says no pets, her parents take her to ButterflyLand, where she receives a host plant with live caterpillars. As Rikki cares for her new pets, she discovers the magic of metamorphosis, the butterfly life cycle, and how caring for living creatures can bring unexpected joy. This interactive Jewish-themed book includes a lot of emotion, parenting skills, counting ten real butterfly varieties, the names of host plants, educational science content about metamorphosis, and a community birthday party that brings neighbors and classmates together. With age-appropriate extend-the-story questions, the book is perfect for read-alouds, classrooms, homeschooling, and nature units.
