Overview

Reviewed by Erin Nicole Cochran for Readers' Favorite This short collection of poems entitled Popcorn by Katie Lewington is engaging. The verses that abound in this compilation center around a theme, food, and the author's eating habits. There may be a word or two that will make Americans scratch their heads. One of those words being squash." It only heightens the entertainment, with the mystery. Toward the end of the collection, Katie divulges to the reader sites and blogs that she either manages or has created on her own to help other writers such as herself. These online locations allow readers of her several works to stay connected to the writer's present and past on-goings. The cover of Katie Lewington's book, Popcorn, also caught me a bit by surprise in a good, off-balancing sort of way. Although it has a picture of a pizza, it clearly says Popcorn, which I feel is an interesting juxtaposition. Oddly enough, I was excited to see what kind of poem a subject such as popcorn would generate. Unfortunately, I did get my hopes up a bit too high, because I didn't see any poem that looked like it related to popcorn. However, I think the title itself is simply to subliminally or subconsciously inform the reader ahead of time that what you are about to read will be entertaining. So, grab your popcorn, and settle in for relatable laughs and sad hard truths about one's eating lifestyle that may be in league with your own. " The purpose of a chapbook is to focus on one theme. Popcorn by Katie Lewington does just that. Food is the theme and poetry the form of writing. In the poems in this chapbook are the ironies of buying diet Cola with fried chicken, wit, humour, and the cunning needed when living among people who will, when your back is turned, swipe your blackcurrent squash.
