Overview
The federal government's substantialuse of information technology (IT)contributes significantly to federalagencies' energy use andenvironmental impact. To help mitigatethis impact, organizations haveadopted practices for using computingresources in a sustainable and moreenvironmentally friendly manner-sometimes referred to as green IT."These practices include equipmentacquisition, use, disposal, and relatedprocesses.GAO was asked to (1) determine theextent to which the government hasdefined policy and guidance on greenIT and how selected federal agenciesare implementing this policy andguidance, and (2) identify leadinggreen IT practices used by federalagencies, state and local governments,and private-sector organizations. To dothis, GAO evaluated federal guidanceand policy, as well as guidance andinitiatives at selected agencies;identified and characterized efforts inthe public and private sectors; andinterviewed officials. GAO recommends OMB and CEQdevelop green IT guidance to helpagencies more effectively measureperformance and encourage the use ofleading practices. In comments on thisreport, OMB and CEQ partiallyconcurred with the recommendations.They agreed to encourage the use ofleading green IT practices but did notagree that additional guidance was..."
