Teenage immigrant Cassandra meets the love of her life on a boat bound for America. But when she is deported back to Haiti, the couple must brave a civil war and unforgiving seas to realize their dreams of love and freedom. Cassandra doesn't understand why her father pulled her out of high school in Haiti and sent her away on a rickety boat bound for America, leaving her family and friends behind. On the way, Cassandra's vessel encounters a sinking boat, and she risks her life to rescue a handsome Cuban boy named Nico. When they reach the shores of Florida, Cassandra and Nico are held in separate parts of a detention center. Still, they find one another and vow to begin their new lives in America together. Ross, a CIA agent with ties to the corrupt Haitian regime, has other ideas. He has Cassandra deported, planning to use her to break the back of the resistance party that her father heads in Haiti. Nico, unable to imagine life in America without Cassandra, tracks her down in Haiti. But they'll have to help Cassandra's father topple the bloodthirsty Haitian regime before they can be safe- in Haiti or in America. Freedom Waters combines elements of an immigration saga, a wartime adventure story, and a romance, and will appeal to readers of books such as American Street by Ibi Zoboi and The Geography of You and Me by Jennifer E.
